Yamaha recently surprised everyone by unveiling the 250cc prototype ‘R25’ at the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show 2013. The production model of R25 is expected to be launched by the end of 2014. It would be powered by a 249cc twin-cylinder engine coupled with a six-speed constant mesh gearbox.
Yamaha has not revealed the power and torque figures of R25. The expected maximum power is 35+ BHP and maximum torque of 28+NM. Once launched, Yamaha R25 would be competing with the likes of Honda CBR250R, Kawasaki Ninja 300, Hyosung GT250R, Suzuki GSR250S, KTM RC 390 and KTM RC 200. Out of these six bikes, the main competitors of Yamaha R25 are CBR250R and Ninja 300.
Honda CBR250R is powered by a 249.6cc engine, which generates maximum power of 25 BHP at 8500 rpm and 23 NM at 7000 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission. Kawasaki Ninja 300 is powered by a 296cc engine, which develops max power and max torque of 39 BHP and 27 NM respectively. There is no word on the price of Yamaha R25, but rumours are that it would be priced in the region of 2.25 lakhs to 2.50 lakh rupees.
According to Yamaha, R25 is a sport bike that you can ride every day. The company also released an official video of Valentino Rossi riding the ‘R25 Prototype’ on a test track and according to him, this bike really packs a PUNCH!
