Guru Nanak Jayanti is also famous by the name of 'Gurupurab' or 'Prakash Utsav'. It is the most sacred festival of Sikhs. This festival commemorates the birthday of 'Guru Nanak Dev Ji' who was the founder of Sikkhism. He was born in 1469 at Talwandi, Punjab.
His main teachings are 'Naam Japo', 'Vand Chako' and 'Kirta Karo'. Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated in India, Pakistan and some parts of England. Gurupurab starts with the reading of the 'Guru Granth Sahib', in the Gurudwara for 48 hours continuously. It is known as 'Akhand Path' and it ends on the day of the festival.
People decorate their houses and visit Gurudwara where Kirtan and special events are arranged. Sweets and Langar is offered to the people irrespective of caste, color or creed. In the night, people burst crackers and make this festival enjoyable with friends or relatives.
