Rani Mukerji was born in Mumbai on 21 March, 1978 to the Mukherjee-Samarth family who belongs to the Indian film industry. She did her education from Maneckji Cooper High School and SNDT Women's University, Mumbai. She also got training in Odissi dance form. Although being disinterested in acting, her mother insisted her to take on the acting profession.

She made her acting debut in year 1997 with the movie 'Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat' which was an economic failure but she got a 'Special Jury' award at the Screen Awards. In this film, she played the role of a rape victim who is forced to marry her rapist. She has shown her remarkable performance in some hit movies like 'Talaash', 'Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna', 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', 'Bunty Aur Babli', 'No One Killed Jessica', 'Saawariya' and 'Black'. The 'Talaash' movie in year 2012 was a great success at boxoffice, earning 27 million USD, in which she was paired with Aamir Khan.

She was admired for her role of a deaf, blind and mute woman in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie 'Black'. The movie was globally recognised and won several awards, earning 4.9 million USD at boxoffice. Besides acting, she is the brand ambassador of 'Shiksha' venture which is for endorsing education to poor children. She has been a part of several concerts for raising the funds for poor and needy.
