Tabu is an Indian Film Actress. She was born as 'Tabassum Hashmi' in Hyderabad on November 4, 1971. She is the niece of 'Shabana Azmi' and the younger sister of actress 'Farah Naaz'. Tabu did her schooling form 'Anns High School' and went to 'St. Xavier's College' for two years in Mumbai, when she moved there in 1983. She has started her career as a child artist in 1980's film 'Bazaar' and in 'Hum Naujawan'. Her debut film as an adult actress is Telugu film 'Coolie No.1' and Boney Kapoor's 'Prem' which was a big hit. She made her debut in Hindi Cinema with film 'Pehla Pehla Pyar' while she rose to fame with film 'Vijaypath' and also received 'Filmfare Best Female Debut Award'. Tabu's appearances in commercially successful films were few and her roles in these films are small, such as 'Biwi No.1', 'Hum Sath-Sath Hain', 'Border' and 'Saajan Chale Sasural'. Her most notable roles include 'Virasat'. 'Hu Tu Tu', 'Chandni Bar', 'Maqbool', 'Cheeni Kum' and 'Maachis'. She won her first 'National Film Award for Best Actress' for her role in Maachis. She has not only acted in Hindi films but also done Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali language films. Her work in the American movie, 'The Namesake' received a lot of appreciation. In 2011, she was awarded with the 'Padma Shri' by the 'Government of India' for her contribution towards the arts.
