Lakes: About

Etymologically, lake means pond or waterway. The word lake comes from Middle English ‘lake’ which developed from Old English ‘lacu’. A lake is a body or jar of either fresh or salt water which can be of considerable size that localized in a basin and surrounded by land. Lakes are not part of ocean and so they are not like lagoons. They are larger and deeper than ponds. Lakes are contrasts to rivers or streams though they are fed and drained with rivers and streams. Natural lakes are found in mountainous areas while other lakes are found along the courses of mature rivers. The majority of the lakes on Earth are fresh water and most of them lie in the Northern Hemisphere at higher latitudes. Lakes have numerous traits like drainage basin, inflow and outflow, nutrient content, dissolved oxygen, pollutants and sedimentations. There are many types of lakes like Periglacial Lake, Glacial Lake, Subglacial Lake, Artificial Lake, Oxbow lake, Meromitic Lake, Underground Lake, Crater lake
